The answer at a glance
Prorated rent = (monthly rent ÷ 30) × 1. A 30-day month gives a daily rate of rent ÷ 30, and a move-in on day 30 leaves 1 billable days. That is $ $33.33 per day on $1,000 rent, and $33.33 due for the partial month.
The table below pre-calculates that arithmetic for rents from $1,000 to $3,000 so you can read your number off directly.
| Monthly Rent | Daily Rate (30 days) | Days Owed | Prorated Rent |
|---|---|---|---|
| $1,000 | $33.33 | 1 of 30 days | $33.33 |
| $1,500 | $50.00 | 1 of 30 days | $50.00 |
| $2,000 | $66.67 | 1 of 30 days | $66.67 |
| $2,500 | $83.33 | 1 of 30 days | $83.33 |
| $3,000 | $100.00 | 1 of 30 days | $100.00 |
Figures use the actual-days-in-the-month basis. A flat 30-day basis or a 365-day year gives a slightly different answer — the interactive calculator shows all three side by side.
How this is calculated
Rent is billed per day, and a move-in on day 30 means possession for 1 days of the 30. Two conventions decide the daily rate: the actual days in the month, or a flat 30-day month. This page uses the actual month, which is the most common lease default.
Prorated rent = (monthly rent ÷ 30) × (30 − 30 + 1)
= (monthly rent ÷ 30) × 1
The 30-day and 365-day bases exist because some leases quote a flat month. At 30 days the calendar basis is close to, but not the same as, a 30-day basis except in a 30-day month; check your lease for which one applies before you pay.

Frequently asked questions
4 answers, no funnel.
How much rent do I owe if I move in on day 30 of a 30-day month?
You owe 1 of the month's 30 days, which is 3.3% of a full month. Divide the monthly rent by 30 to get the daily rate, then multiply by 1. On $1,800 rent that is $60.00 a day and $60.00 due.
What is the daily rent rate in a 30-day month?
The daily rate is the monthly rent divided by 30. On $1,500 rent it is $50.00 per day. A landlord using a flat 30-day basis instead would divide by 30, and one using the 365-day year would divide by 365 and multiply by 12.
Is a move-in on day 30 charged from that day or the whole month?
You are charged from the move-in day through the end of the month, both days inclusive, so 1 days here. The rest of the month, before you took possession, is not billed as regular rent.
How is prorated rent different from a full month?
A full month bills all 30 days. Moving in on day 30 bills only 1, so you pay 3.3% of a full month and save the other 96.7%.
